Dya 4: Inle Lake – Pindaya - Indaing Sightseeing (by boat )

From Pindaya drive down in to the valley to Nyaungshwe on the edge of Inle Lake, and board your private local boat to take you to your hotel. Inle Lake is simply magical. At 1000 metres elevation, the temperatures are pleasant, and the calm waters are dotted with Intha stilt house villages, floating vegetable gardens and fishing canoes, set against the back drop of the beautiful Shan hills. Motorised boats are the means of transport across the lake, although the Intha people get around in traditional flat bottomed boats using a unique and skillful form of leg rowing. In the afternoon, pick-up from your hotel and travel by long-tailed boat across the lake to Indaing, at the western end of Inle, for one of the most scenic trips on the Lake. Passing through the busy village of Ywama, the largest on the Lake, with many channels and tall teak houses on stilts; enter a long, often tree-lined canal, either side of which farmers cultivate their land against the backdrop of the Shan Hills. Disembark at the jetty and walk for 15 minutes through Indaing village to reach the 14th – 18th century pagoda ruins of Nyaung Ohak. Many pagodas here remain charmingly unrenovated, with plants and even small trees growing out of them, making the area very atmospheric. A covered walkway popular with souvenir stallholders leads up to Shwe Inn Thein Paya, a complex of weather-beaten 17th-18th century zedi; some newly reconstructed. Returning to the river you have the possivility of walking along a lovely shady path for 30 minutes to the intha village of Sema. From here contiunue by boat down stream past Yethar village, watching local life on the banks and birds in the trees until rejoining the Lake near Phaung Daw Oo Paya

Approximately 2 hours drive from Taunggyi in countryside inhabited by the Pa-O people lie the ‘lost’ ruins of Kakku, a pagoda encircled by dozens of small stupas. Little is known about the origins of this unusual place – the Pa-O believe that the original pagoda dates back some 2,000 years. Wander through the stupas which are decorated with fine stucco work and Buddha images – some in good repair, others not. Visit a Pa-O village and a large monastery on the way back to Taunggyi. We visited the Golden Rock on November 3rd which unbeknown to us was one of the Holiest days on the Buddhist calendar. There were tens of thousands of people visiting as well. However this made our visit even more interesting. The Rock itself is precariously balanced...overlooking a deep valley. Sunset was spectacular. Many local people brought bedding and blankets and slept there overnight. There are food vendors everywhere. The trip up and down the mountain was an "experience" on the back of a truck! A cable car is opening in December.

A really beautiful place to visit for the day. Amazing how the rock balances on the edge without falling off. View from the mountain top is also very nice. Very popular amongst the locals who visit for worship. Highly recommended! The truck ride up was an adventure in itself. The driver drove like a race car driver and midway had to stop to wait for the road to clear for a safe passage. So we all sat on the truck, waited and watched him eat his lunch. If you choose to ride the 2nd part of the way by cable car, it will be extra charge.

Very recommended for all who travel Myanmar. Let alone the trip to the Golden rock with the pickups is an experience itself. The rock is in the midst of the asian hills the golden rock is breathtaking. And the feeling of piece and the silence up there should be experienced by every traveler who has the chance to be in Myanmar. I found it to be an honour to stick the plated gold onto the rock and be part of this spiritual activity although i am not a buddhist. Very calming and inspiring place to be. Maybe the most tear-inducing in whole Myanmar.

You reach this sacred place in the mountains only by truck (45 minutes drive). Our only regret was that we didn't book a hotel in the mountain ... as the last truck drive back was at 7 PM (and 6 PM during winter time). We would have loved to stay a little longer to admire the sunset and enjoy the special mystic atmosphere during the night ! Next time ... ;-)

Golden Rock rocks! Amazing sight! An experience more than I have expected. Worth the visit with all the Budhist pilgrims. This is one of the pilgrimage pagodas in Myanmar.
